Louis Armstrong Biography

 Early life
Armstrong often stated in public interviews that he was born on July 4, 1900, a date that has been noted in many biographies. Although he died in 1971, it wasn't until the mid-1980s that his true birth date of August 4, 1901 was discovered through the examination of baptismal records. He was recorded as an out-of-wedlock black child.
Armstrong was born into a very poor family in New Orleans, Louisiana, the grandson of slaves. He spent his youth in poverty in a rough neighborhood of Uptown New Orleans, known as “Back of Town”, as his father,

William Armstrong (1881–1922), abandoned the family when Louis was an infant and took up with another woman. His mother, Mary "Mayann" Albert (1886–1942), then left Louis and his younger sister Beatrice Armstrong Collins (1903–1987) in the care of his grandmother, Josephine Armstrong and at times, his Uncle Isaac. At five, he moved back to live with his mother and her relatives, and saw his father only in parades. He attended the Fisk School for Boys where he likely had his first exposure to Creole music. He brought in some money as a paperboy and also by finding discarded food and selling it to restaurants but it wasn’t enough to keep his mother from prostitution. He hung out in dance halls, particularly the “Funky Butt,” which was the closest to his home, where he observed everything from licentious dancing to the quadrille. He hauled coal to Storyville, the famed red-light district, and listened to the bands playing in the brothels and dance halls, especially Pete Lala’s where Joe "King" Oliver performed and other famous musicians would drop in to jam.Armstrong grew up at the bottom of the social ladder in a highly segregated city but one which lived in a constant fervor of music, which was generally called “ragtime” - not yet “jazz”. Despite the hard early days, Armstrong seldom looked back at his youth as the worst of times but instead drew inspiration from it, “Every time I close my eyes blowing that trumpet of mine—I look right in the heart of good old New Orleans...It has given me something to live for.”After dropping out of the Fisk School at eleven, Armstrong joined a quartet of boys in similar straits as he and they sang in the streets for money. He also started to get into trouble. Cornet player Bunk Johnson said he taught Armstrong to play by ear at Dago Tony's Tonk in New Orleans, although in his later years Armstrong gave the credit to Oliver. His first cornet was bought with money loaned to him by the Karnofskys, a Russian-Jewish immigrant family who had a junk hauling business and gave him odd jobs. To express gratitude towards the Karnofskys, who took him in as almost a family member and fed and nurtured him, Armstrong wore a Star of David pendant for the rest of his life.

Armstrong with his first trumpet instructor, Peter Davis in 1965.
Armstrong developed his cornet playing seriously in the band of the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs, where he had been sent multiple times for general delinquency, most notably for a long term after firing his stepfather's pistol into the air at a New Year's Eve celebration, as police records confirm. Professor Peter Davis (who frequently appeared at the Home at the request of its administrator, Captain Joseph Jones) instilled discipline in and provided musical training to the otherwise self-taught Armstrong. Eventually, Davis made Armstrong the band leader. The Home band played around New Orleans and the thirteen year old Louis began to draw attention by his cornet playing, starting him on a musical career. At fourteen he was released from the Home, living again with his father and new stepmother and then back with his mother and also back to the streets and their temptations. Armstrong got his first dance hall job at Henry Ponce’s where Black Benny became his protector and guide. He hauled coal by day and played his cornet at night.
He also played in the city's frequent brass band parades and listened to older musicians every chance he got, learning from Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, Kid Ory, and above all, Joe "King" Oliver, who acted as a mentor and father figure to the young musician. Later, he played in the brass bands and riverboats of New Orleans and first started traveling with the well-regarded band of Fate Marable which toured on a steamboat up and down the Mississippi River. He described his time with Marable as "going to the University," since it gave him a much wider experience working with written arrangements.
In 1919, Joe Oliver decided to go north and he resigned his position in Kid Ory's band, then regarded as the best hot jazz group in New Orleans. Armstrong replaced his mentor and played second cornet. Soon he was promoted to first cornet and he also became second trumpet for the Tuxedo Brass Band, a society band.
Louis Armstrong was also a Freemason, Montgomery Lodge No. 18 (Prince Hall), New York.

OneRepublic

Ryan Tedder (lead vocals, guitar, piano)

Zach Filkins (guitar, backing vocals)
Drew Brown (guitar)
Brent Kutzle (bass, cello)
Eddie Fisher (drums)

"The toughest thing to do is write a hit song and the easiest thing to do is act like a rock band," says OneRepublic singer-songwriter Ryan Tedder. "But we had a hit song before we had an album and we can't pull off the 'rock god' thing. We do everything backwards.

OneRepublic's hit "Apologize" was not even the song's original version, but a remix heard on Timbaland Presents: Shock Value. The original appears on Dreaming Out Loud, the band's debut album, released November 20, 2007, on Timbaland's Mosley Music Group imprint via Interscope Records. That's right, OneRepublic is a full-on rock band executive-produced and on a label headed by a super-producer best known for hip-hop (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z) and who has branched out into pop (Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado).

"It sounds insane," says Tedder, who produced a couple of songs on the album, largely produced by Greg Wells (Deftones, Mika, Pink). "But Timbaland is the single most musical guy I've ever met, no matter the genre. That's why we said, 'Let's do it.' If you do things for the right reason, good things happen."

A few years ago, Tedder had another choice - either go down the road of writing and performing "pop" tunes as a solo artist or try to strike out in his own direction making music he felt could connect on a more personal level. He chose the latter.

He had performed on a singer/songwriter show on MTV and was given a recording contract at the epicenter of all things pop during the era of boy bands and pinup princesses. "But how could I ever take myself seriously," he says, "if I was embarrassed by what I was singing? There are a lot of artists who want to make you shake your ass on the dance floor, but only a handful that connect on a deeper level. I wanted more than just a catchy tune. There's nothing like a good pop song, but there's a fine line between accessibility and credibility, and that's the line I want to walk."

Fortunately, Timbaland saw him perform on the MTV show and called to say he wanted Tedder to work with him. For a 21-year-old who quit his job at a Pottery Barn warehouse in Nashville, vowed to never take another non-music gig, and sold his car so he could buy recording equipment, being taken under Timbaland's wing was a dream come true for Tedder. He calls the next two years in studios from New York to Los Angeles to Miami "Producer 101" because it was like going to college for production.

Tedder's father had been a singer/songwriter in the 70's for acts like gospel star Sandi Patty. Tulsa-born Tedder took up piano at age three and singing when he was seven.

Studying the art of songwriting by deconstructing hits chord by chord, he became enamored with songwriters as diverse as Diane Warren and Bono. Yet he also had a desire to be center stage. "It's the typical lead singer insecurity--I wanted the spotlight but not all of the responsibility. I was finding my own voice, but I knew that for the songs I wanted to do, the vehicle had to be a band."

Thus, in 2003, after his MTV experience and subsequent tenure with Timbaland, he returned to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he had spent his senior year in high school, and recruited classmate and guitarist Zach Filkins. The Iowa-born Filkins had spent his formative years, from 7 to 15, in Barcelona, Spain, where he intensely studied classical guitar. Back in the States for a couple of years in Illinois, he then relocated to Colorado Springs, where he met Ryan on the soccer team. Though they went their separate ways after graduation-- they kept in touch.

When they reunited, they moved to L.A., and promptly fell on hard times. "I'm not proud of it," Tedder admits, "but to buy groceries I had to write bad checks."

Given such dire straits, a couple of early band members exited and were replaced by guitarist Drew Brown and drummer Eddie Fisher. Born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, Brown saw his first concert as a 10-year-old in 1994. "My dad took me to see Weezer and Teenage Fanclub. He threw me in the mosh pit so I could get the full experience."

When his former band's drummer went to L.A. and joined OneRepublic, Brown followed. "I told my parents, 'I'm not coming home. Send more money.' I'm just not cut out for anything more responsible than being in a rock band. Only recently my dad stopped regretting taking me to that concert."

The Oregon- and California-raised Fisher had a similar inspiration. A kid who was always beating out a rhythm tapping pencils on desks, he didn't become serious about the drums until he was in 7th grade and saw a U2 concert at Tempe Stadium in Arizona. It happened to be the 1987 performance recorded for the Rattle and Hum album and film. "It moved me so much that I sacrificed everything to be in music," he says.

What followed for OneRepublic was a short-lived deal with Columbia, and upon the deal's termination, the band was contemplating whether or not to continue, when, out of nowhere, OneRepublic became one of the most popular bands on MySpace. "Maybe the music climate changed," says Tedder. "All of a sudden we were getting e-mails from kids saying that because of one of our songs they didn't commit suicide or they got through their parents' divorce. We finally connected with the audience. We said to ourselves, 'We can't quit now.'" When Timbaland launched his Mosley Music Group label with Interscope, he was quick to sign OneRepublic as his first rock act.

Meanwhile, Tedder has continued with his production work on pop and hip hop under the pseudonym "Alias." Even now, some industry insiders do not realize that Tedder and Alias are one and the same.

His credits include writing, and singing on, three tracks for Paul Oakenfold's Grammy nominated A Lively Mind, penning and producing "Do It Well" for Jennifer Lopez, "Bleeding Love" for Leona Lewis and "He Said, She Said" for Ashley Tisdale, and co-producing and co-writing "Love Like This" for Natasha Bedingfield with The Runaways. He's also worked on tracks for Baby Bash, 2Pac, Chris Cornell, Bubba Sparxxx, Blake Lewis, YouTube phenomenon Esmee Denters, and produced and wrote songs for the acclaimed 2006 indie film Step Up. "I've written and produced from the poppiest of pop to rock to heavy hip-hop to electro," Tedder says. "That's my job, but OneRepublic is the big picture."

That picture gained a new sound with the band's most recent addition. Orange County-native Brent Kutzle has played bass in hardcore and pop punk bands, but has also played the cello since the fourth grade. " I made myself a promise to never join a band where I wasn't able to play both instruments. I could never give up celloI really love playing it." Using effects such as delay, reverb and looping, Kutzle has transformed the sound of the cello for a rock band.

Clearly, OneRepublic is an unusual rock band. "One difference (from) other groups is that we're always rotating instruments," Kutzle points out. "I might play keyboards, and Ryan bass, or I play cello, Ryan piano, and Drew, bass. Sometimes we forget who plays what on a song." For OneRepublic, it's all about the song.

Says Tedder: "If I'm not getting goosebumps when I write the chorus, then others aren't going to either. I want that 'hair standing on end' feeling. They may have simple melodies but our songs are about real life. It's complexity wearing the mask of simplicity."

Songs on Dreaming Out Loud are about what you want versus what you have, why you're not where you want to be, and how to get where you want to go. That the band members have reached where they have wanted to go seems weird even to them.

"We figured we would do what we love and not make any money," says Brown. "But we've blown past wherever we thought we'd get. We are now able to perform music that is getting heard by a pretty broad audience. This is bigger than us." Tedder agrees: "This is about affecting people in a positive way. This is about trying to make a difference in people's lives and hearts the way so many bands and songs did for us."

Maybe OneRepublic doesn't do everything backwards after all. Perhaps this is one band that has it exactly right.

Biography Jamiroquai

The current biography:

A decade and a half is a long time to be at the top of your game; no matter what that game might be. In music, it's a near impossibility. While many set off as next big things, few stay the distance to arrive as genuine international icons. After 15 years, 159 weeks on the UK singles chart, 232 weeks on the albums chart, more than 20 million album sales and five mammoth world tours - playing to 5 million people in 38 countries - it's fair to sat that Jay Kay, the quick stepping 37 year-old professionally known as Jamiroquai, has finally made it.

What's more, he's got the 6 multi-platinum albums, 5 MTV awards, the Grammy, the Ivor Novello and enough lurid tabloid headlines to prove it. And now, just in case there was any doubt, he's got 'High Times - The Singles 1992-2006", a singles collection which rams home the point and tracks the decade and a half journey via his irresistible rare groove and unmistakable barbed disco.

It's an album which Kay has openly resisted for the best half of his career; determined that Jamiroquai's greatest hits wasn't going to be a couple of top tens and some well chosen filler. As it is, their 6 consistently on-point albums have proved such a reliable source of danceable hits, that there wasn't enough room to fit them all on the 19 track CD. For sure, the mark of a true pop survivor.

From the vanguard of the early '90s acid jazz revolution to one of the most recognisable musicians of a generation. From a squat in Ealing, West London, to a lush green Buckinghamshire Manor. From a skate board to a garage full of Ferrari's. The first 15 years of the Jamiroquai story has been nothing if not memorable. And, more importantly, from organic, horn-laden funk to computer-ramped glitter ball moments, every move has been soundtracked by Kay's bankable mix of sly grooves and addictive melodies.

Back in Ealing in 1992, the impact of one particular groove can't be overestimated. The minute 'When you Gonna Learn' was released on Acid Jazz, a career and a movement were born. Vintage jazz-funk, complete with sweet horn groove, string quartet and an impassioned eco-political message that was a decade ahead of its time, it rescued rare groove from the chin stroking few and introduced the world to Jay Kay, his big hat, quick feet and unique way of doing things.

The effect was instant. On the strength of that one song EMI Publishing got their cheque book out and Sony Records put their now fabled 8 album deal on the table. Not to be outdone, the music press branded him "a wannabe Stevie Wonder" - which Kay described as "flattering, misguided, but above all, boring" - and started one of the most enduring love-hate relationships in modern music.

Whatever his detractors said about the hats, the dancing, the loose-limbed funk or the save-the-planet message - in 1993 singing about pillaging ther planet, ending illegal wars and cancelling third world debt got you laughed at, today it gets you a knighthood - Jamiroquai's fans had the louder voice, giving him a top ten single with unshakable anti-war anthem 'Too Young to Die' and making 'Emergency on Planet Earth' the year's biggest selling debut album as it entered the charts at Number One.

A year later, Kay & Co continued to carve their own very distinct niche with second album, 'Return of the Space Cowboy'. Through a haze of drugs and frustration its darker grind and jaded inner-city social commentary established Jamiroquai as the face of British Urban music. Still to this day the song 'Return of the Space Cowboy' is Kiss FM's most played track of all time. Enough said really.

Still, it was down to third album, 1997's 'Travelling Without Moving', some logic defying dance moves and a moving sofa, to take Jamiroquai over the top and to the masses. The album was a slotting together of the pieces, all the planets coming into allignment. Kay's dedication to sly grooves, coalescing with the refinement of both his songwriting skills and pop sensibility, resulting in party anthems 'High Times' and 'Alright', 'Cosmic Girl"s intergalactic boogie and 'Virtual Insanity', and irresistibly catchy warning against genetic engineering, accompanied by a mind-bending video which captured the imagination and took Jamiroquai global.

By the time the dust settled, the album, singles and 'Virtual Insanity' video - directed by Jonathan Grazer and based on Kay's original idea - had netted 5 MTV Awards, a Grammy and an Ivor Novello, put Jamiroquai on the cover of USA Today and sold more than a million albums in America.

Since then Jamiroquai has been a firm fixture of the charts, the headlines and music television; their stunning collection of videos causing almost as much interest as Kay's private life. The voyage hasn't always been plain sailing, nor for that matter, a flurry of awards. Despite being the UK's biggest musical export of the '90s after Oasis and the Spice Girls, recognition in official circles has, at times, been thin on the ground - Jay Kay stands as The Brits unluckiest nominee, having yet to win after 15 nominations. But the good ship Jamiroquai is, "still floating" as Kay himself puts it, "because it was made with solid great lumps of oak, not cheap fibre glass."

As well as weathering pop's ever fickle tastes, Kay's groove devotion has also survived just about every music cliche going, from departing band mates to the rigours of the rock'n'roll lifestyle and all the excesses that go with it. In fact, Kay's positively thrived on adversity.

The (at the time) acrimonious departure of bass player Stuart Zender resulted in one of Jamiroquai's strongest albums to date, 1998's 'Synkronized', complete with singles 'Canned Heat' and UK Number 1 'Deeper Underground'. Similarly, at a time when Kay's personal life was constantly on the front pages, he delivered club classic 'Little L' and 2001's shimmering dance album, 'A Funk Odyssey', the second biggest selling of Jamiroquai's career.

And with his dark days of over-indulgence firmly behind him, Kay tackled the tricky issue of a comeback with 2005's banner-waving declaration of health, 'Dynamite', which garnered both the best reviews of Jamiroquai's career, and a second Grammy nomination, this time for the ferocious grind of lead single, 'Feels Just Like It Should'.

Which brings us up-to-date, to the here and now and the question of how to follow such a staggering catalogue of hits. Well, new tracks 'Runaway' and 'Radio' certainly live up to Kay's claim to have "plenty more cracking stuff to come."

"There's a hell of a lot of pressure to come up with two new hit singles for your greatest hits, but I think we've cracked it," said Kay of 'Runaway"s glistening disco strings and 'Radio"s salacious rock hook. "We're very pleased with them. We just went straight for the kill. I wanted to do something very instant which they both are. I love 'em."

"Radio's great fun, a cheeky little track about when you meet a lovely young lady and find out that she likes girls even more than she likes boys. I think we'll leave it at that." 'Runaway', on the other hand, like all Jay's best disco moments, comes from a slightly more poignant place. "I really like the sentiment. I think it's something everyone can relate to. 'I just want to runaway'. Sometimes you do feel that you just want out. When the pressure's on, you just want to leave all this behind."

But fans and detractors alike can relax. 'High Times - Singles 1992-2006' is very much volume one of the greatest hits, he's not ready to retire just yet.

"I like the sense of closure it has about it," says Kay. "I've closed that chapter of my career and I'm ready to start the next. We've already got tracks lined-up that are very different. Very exciting. So it makes sense to do the greatest hits now. It feels like the right time, in readiness for the next phase."

That Kay's already planning the next phase of the Jamiroquai saga is indeed, good news. Because not only is he the last of a dying breed: the genuine rock star - from the near indecent obsession with Italian sports cars to designing his own signature range for Hugo Boss - he's also a genuine character. In an era when everything's a sanitised sound bite, jay Kay is one man who can be relied upon for his full, frank and unedited opinion. For that alone he should be applauded. But most of all, as 'High Times - Singles 1992-2006' proves with every single frenetic track, music, like life, would be a hell of a ot duller without him.

JUST TAKE MY HEART : MR. BIG

( PLAY WITH THE FEEL... DONT SKIP ANY TAB...TAB NOT TO THE BEAT)
Arranged on Piano and Permormed on Guitar... Nice Song.

Verse:

It's late at night and neither one of us is sleeping
I can't imagine living my life after you're gone
Wondering why so many questions have no answers
I keep on searching for the reason why we went wrong
Where is our yesterday
You and I could use it right now
But if this is goodbye

Chorus:

Just take my heart when you go
I don't have the need for it anymore
I'll always love you, but you're too hard to hold
Just take my heart when you go

Verse:

Here we are about to take the final step now
I just can't fool myself, I know there's no turning back
Face to face it's been an endless conversation
But when the love is gone you're left with nothing but talk
I'd give my everything
If only I could turn you around
But if this is goodbye

Chorus:

Just take my heart when you go
I don't have the need for it anymore
I'll always love you, but you're too hard to hold
Just take my heart when you go

Metallica - Nothing Else Matters ( Lyrics )

So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
and nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
and nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
and nothing else matters

never cared for what they do
never cared for what they know
but I know

So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
and nothing else matters

never cared for what they do
never cared for what they know
but I know

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us, something new
Open mind for a different view
and nothing else matters

never cared for what they say
never cared for games they play
never cared for what they do
never cared for what they know
and I know

So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No, nothing else matters

DREAM THEATER Chaos In Motion 2007/2008 LIVE DVD SETS TO BE RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER DOCUMENTING 2007-2008 WORLD TOUR 115 SHOWS, 105 CITIES, 35 COUNTRI

Few bands inspire such fanaticism among their fans as Dream Theater. The best way to satiate this dedicated legion is to provide them with even more material to devour and Dream Theater are doing just that this September. The band will release Chaos In Motion 2007/2008, which documents their "Chaos In Motion" world tour, which kicked off June 3, 2007 at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Milan, Italy and concluded almost a year to the day later on June 4, 2008 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's essentially a travelogue of their most recent touring experience and it hits shelves on September 23. Chaos In Motion 2007/2008 will be available in two configurations: as a double DVD set and as five disc collector's set which includes two DVDs and three CDs, containing 14 live tracks featured in the DVD set and expanded artwork.

The Chaos in Motion Tour was a trek that found the band traversing the globe, playing 115 shows in 105 cities in 35 countries on five continents to hundreds of thousands of fans. It also included the first annual Progressive Nation Tour, an idea that the band had kicked around for a few years and finally launched into action this past spring.

Chaos In Motion 2007/2008 is the latest in a series of DVDs from the band and it features performances captured throughout the entirety of the tour, unlike their last three RIAA-certified Platinum DVDs, Metropolis 2000: Live Scenes From New York, Live at Budokan and Score, all of which focused on as single concert event.

Drummer and DVD creative director Mike Portnoy plumed his personal archives for footage in order to provide fans with the ultimate tour souvenir. He assembled over three hours of complete live performances, taking footage from shows in Rotterdam, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Boston, Bangkok and Vancouver. The tracks were mixed and effectively brought to life by Kevin Shirley. The second disc is packed with bonus material, including promo videos, live screen projection films, a photo gallery and a 90-minute documentary that'll make you feel like you're riding in the passenger's seat of the band's tour bus, as it takes you on the road and behind the scenes with the band and crew. It's like a virtual backstage pass that grants fans further unprecedented access.
